Who we help

Conductive Education helps children with motor disabilities and their families

There are many conditions which affect the acquisition of motor skills, it is for this reason that Steps does not have any strict criteria for the children it helps. We prefer to meet with you and your child and have a relaxed discussion to decide whether we can help.

Some conditions where CE implementation can be hugely beneficial include but are not limited to;

Cerebral Palsy

Every year in the UK, one in every 400 babies is born with Cerebral Palsy. Cerebral palsy is a condition that affects movement, posture and coordination. Sometimes these conditions can be seen around the time of birth or they may not become obvious until later. Sometimes there is no obvious reason why a child has cerebral palsy, but research suggests that it is mainly due to factors affecting the brain before or during birth, but causes may be multiple and complex.

Genetic Disorders

Some genetic disorders can result in motor disabilities such as Muscular Dystrophy and Down Syndrome. Down Syndrome is caused by the presence of an extra chromosome and it affects about one in every 1,000 babies born each year in the UK.

Stroke or Brain Injury

There are over 400 childhood strokes a year in the UK, affecting babies, children and young people. Stroke can effect each child very differently and can cause issues with mobility, coordination and learning. Many people believe children fully recover after stroke because their brain is still developing but it’s more accurate to say that children are better at adapting to the effects of stroke.

Motor Disorders and Delay

Umbrella terms referring to neurological conditions that characteristically affect the speed, fluency, quality, and ease of voluntary muscle movements. Motor disorders are malfunctions of the nervous system that cause involuntary or uncontrollable movements or actions of the body. These disorders can cause lack of intended movement or an excess of involuntary movement. Symptoms of motor disorders include tremors, jerks, twitches, spasms, contractions, or gait problems. Movement disorders may cover a wide range of severity.

Global Development Delay (GDD)

An umbrella term used when children are significantly delayed in their cognitive and physical development. It can be diagnosed when a child is delayed in one or more milestones, categorised into motor skills, speech, cognitive skills, and social and emotional development.

Spina Bifida

Around 700 babies a year in the UK are born with a more severe form of Spina Bifida which can cause weakness or paralysis of the legs, incontinence and a loss of sensation.

Rare/Undiagnosed Conditions

If you are still seeking a diagnosis this will not prevent you from accessing our service, please get in contact to discuss your child’s needs with us.

We do support children with Autism as a secondary condition, however we do not have the expertise or experience to provide services to children whose primary impairment is Autism. Please always call us and speak to us, we will be able to advise as to whether Steps is the right service for your child and point you in the right direction if we feel you will be better supported elsewhere.

Who can access our service?

Steps is here to support children with many complex conditions including mobility delay, motor disorders, developmental delay and neurological disorders. The children that Steps helps can have a wide range of needs and for that reason there is no strict criteria for accessing our help, we do not decide whether Conductive Education is suitable based on diagnosis. We prefer to meet with you and your child and have a relaxed discussion to decide whether we can help.

We understand how difficult it can be for parents to reach out for help, many families come to Steps not knowing where to turn and are in a dark place. We are here to show you the way out of that dark place and help you find joy and happiness with the right support in place.

Nothing! Steps is a charity and our service is totally free. We operate purely on donations, grants and fundraising.

Anyone! families can contact us directly to refer themselves and we can also be approached by professionals involved in the child’s care. Simply call us or send us an email using the details at the bottom of this page and one of our skilled staff will be in touch to discuss the child’s needs. Many families find out about Steps through word of mouth via friends and family, we have no strict referral criteria so please do get in touch.

We invite all new families to come along to a session to see what we do, you can take part as much or as little as you like and really get a feel for whether Steps fits your child’s needs.

At Steps, we are always keen to link up with other professionals involved in a child’s care. We take a holistic approach to the meeting the needs of the child, adapting our tasks and activities to their individual needs.

We welcome visits from professionals so that we can demonstrate the work that we do, we also accept students on placement and can offer work experience placements too.
